This is not a re-run; although it may read like one... What goes on.. I'm Jay Porks, this is the Jay Porks Experience and The twenty fifth edition of the Jay Porks Never Ending Concert Series tonight takes us back to Terminal 5... 610 W 56th street in New York City for another night of Hole... Fresh of their visit to the metapausal women of the View this morning, and the release of the first Hole record in over a decade- let's see if they can pull it off again- can this place rock as hard as last night? For my face value ticket price of $35 dollars I would sure hope so...
Got here just as the doors opened a 8PM.. the Love Loves are not the
1st opener tonight, as that void has been filled by the show time
being 915 tonight as oppose to the 815 of last night... I had to come
early to explore the second and third floors of this used-to-be disco.
The left side of the second floor balcony is roped off and the event staff dude said it was VIP.. I saw "Little Fish" written on sheets of paper atop the tables.. Little Fish has VIPs? Who knew.. So I take a seat on one of these couches on the 2nd floor and relax because the TV screens in front of me will allow me to see when there is some action on stage, but for now they just show advertisements for, what else, other "Bowery Presents" sponsored events.. 8:28pm and the sides of the balconies in the back and right side of the second floor are already packed with eager fans.. And here I thought it was going to be an easy night for me, in a chair and all- doesn't appear that way.. Headed up to the 3rd floor..
Third floor is a little packed- I'd still be able to get some room along the side- but I gotta get out to the roof deck and have myself a veggie burger..okay you got me I'm not having a veggie burger, but the simple fact that they are available is just so cool.. The hipsters can stay fed..
Little Fish hit the stage at 9:02.. And I will not even attempt to get back downstairs as I park myself on a couch on front of one of the screens on the third floor.. Freak that- I stood up all night last night i deserve a seag.. It already looks more full than it did last night at the end of Hole's set.. The dude next to me is from Germany and speaks "very little English" and was not to happy when I told him that Hole played for less than an hour last night.. He said he flew into Newark 5 hours ago, picked up the Village voice and saw the show advertised and came here hoping to get a ticket.. And obviously he got one.. Thanks for the beer German dude- and hold on to that Nirvana ticket ( dude told me of a Nirvana show he bought tickets for in 1994.. A show scheduled after April in 94)
Little Fish second night in a row begin to grow on me.. They're a two man(person) ban in the studio and they bring an extra hand or two on tour.. I really wish they'd name one of thier songs so I can pass the title along to you... She might have mentioned a name or two but her accent isn't necessarily speaking the language as much as it chews it up and spits it out( that's a Stewie Griffin line) .. Oh wait there it is, they named a song! "Darling Dear".. Juju says it's about " getting someone into bed".. Whatever you say- the song is cool, sounds like we have an effects pedal in the house.. Little Fish seems to be better received than last night- they played a song called "Am I Crazy" which was pretty cool.. They went off at 933..
The video I took from Hole's set last night is currently giving me
upload it, like 20 second into the video the sound cuts out for that I apologize.... As soon
as I figure out why that is I will fix it, but since that's the case I
don't feel the need to get multiple songs taped- so I'm not sure what
exactly I'll have in terms of pictures..
Is that Hole soundchecking at 9:48? They fooled around a while and the
military style drum roll started, this must be their intro music
because they did the same thing last night- they walk on stage at
exactly 1015.. Opened it up with the "pretty on the inside"/"sympathy
for the devil" intro from last night- but the roar of the crowd is
crazy loud- sounds louder than last night.. "Skinny Little Bitch"
follows.. People on the third floor are standing on furniture right
near the balconies edge... Not the safest lookin thing I've seen...
"Miss World" follows, and I hope we're not headed for the same exact
set list as last night- actually I take that back- they played every
song I wanted to hear last night( with the exception of Jennifers
Body)..... "Violet" starts-i guess I'm not the only one who knows the
words- this place is trembling with 3500 different individuals singing
along.. This place is shaking- Courtney made us promise to still love
her if they "didn't play any old songs".. We agreeed and enjoyed....
Next up was the title track from the latest release- "Nobody's
Daughter".. This song is great- a grinder in my book.. The guitars
grind out throughout the song and seem layered several times although
they are not.. I don't think they played this last night-and if they
did it got past me.. After that song ended Courtney took of the white
button down she had on and had on a black dress thing going on
underneath.. it was hot- they jumped in "Letter To God" next.. This
song is epic- song has a loud- quiet - loud approach to it.. Getting
really quiet and really loud equally.. Larkin taking that guitar to
town with this riff... Next up Love states - " this is a song about
that Malibu place- it's not Malibu that's later, this is PCH" "Pacific
Coast highway" is what she was referring to.. Another brillant song
off the new record.. Where have they been for these years? This rocks!
Looking up at the screen.. On stage looks to be a well tuned
instrument of a band playing- they're hella tight right now.. Bombing
out this tune they shine the stage lights on the crowd- Which was
greeted by cheers of joy...next up "Gold Dust Woman" , a Fleetwood Mac
cover.. Awesome.. I love the way they do this song...it's like
Fleetwood Mac but with that touch of grunge that all genres of music
need... Stevie Nicks would be proud (or would she).. Before the next
number Love says " this is the number one song I iTunes if I'm
correct" as they get into " Someone Elses Bed".. Great song...followed
it with the aforementioned "Malibu", that got everyone up- including
me- who had to get some sort of video to turn into pictures.. I got a
nice shot from the third floor of the stage and some of the standing
fans in the front.. " Celebrity Skin" followed.. So we're almost
following the same set from last night with some minor changes.. They
tried to go off by playing " Samantha"(the only song I recorded all night) and Love said " we'll be back
if you want us"... So we now await the encore a 1104pm.. This is the
same time the set ended last night- encore and all..
Out for the encore, Love changed into the same heavenly white dress

as last night .." Play with Fire" seems to be a song they are getting
into the habit of playing on tour.... Didn't know Courtney was such a
devoted Stones- head.. Maybe they're just easy to play.. They said
they cut it short last night because Micko's wrist is messed up- she
called him a pussy too.. "Doll Parts" next- everyone is having a hell
of a time right now- everyone is smiling- singing and being drunk
enjoying great music... Forgot how much I love this damn song....
Thought the night would end the same as last, with " Northern
Lights"... But I was surprised when " Never Go Hungry" started
playing.. Love repeated that " he is in alot of pain" referring to
Micko's wrist, which is hurt and we don't know why.. Never go hungry
people are walking out because they know it's the last song.. It a
song that sounds like it was written after a week of listening to
Blind Lemon Jefferson and Leadbelly records.. Great song, almost like
a slave song in a way- sounds like it was sang out in the fields...
They ended that song and their set at 11:23.. Bout 20 minutes later
than last night...
Another jammed packed show.. Gold Dust Woman is my personal
highlight.. After catching that cover on YouTube I never thought I'd
have the privilege of hearing it live... Total awesomeness.. Words
cannot describe( even tho I just spent the whole night describing it)
the insanity of seeing Hole live... It really does feel like the 90's
all over again- except I'm not in Junior High School...
Our 90's theme will continue on May 2nd, as Roseland Ballroom braces
itself for the Jay Pork Experience to roll through for the Sublime
(with Rome) show.. That should kick as much ass as these two nights
did- in it's own way.. As for me, well I wrote this review while at
the show, so right now I'm in a cab on the West Side Highway("With
your gun in my hands") headed to the ferry- this will be up soon as I
get home.. Thanks for putting up with my non-sense for a few minutes
of your day- catch everyone May 2nd.......LATE

open the door and get hit in the face with smoke.. not weed smoke or cigarette smoke.. BBQ smoke.. there is a fucking barbeque on the roof, with yet another full bar and people chillin' all over the place.. that shit was fucking awesome.. the vibes were great up there, I hit the bar and got a shot of cafe petrone with a bud light for a total of 17 bucks then I headed back down after my cig... what a spot.. you could see the surrounding buildings and all that other cool stuff that goes with good vibes... it was cool up there, but the reason this night exists is about to hit the stage I'm assuming, so downstairs I must head...
see what the roadies are up to and how close we are to this.. sign said Hole- 10:15... lets hope so...
this is actually a shot from when they were playing Violet.. Next up some new songs, as Courtney phrased it “You have to hear this new shit because it's not gonna be new for long”... “Letter to God”, “Pacific Coast Highway” and “Someone Else's Bed” are three epic songs off the new record, 'Nobody's Daughter', in stores today.. after those three songs, here's a shocker- “Malibu”! Not a shocker like I wasn't expected to hear it but they were rockin' so hard I didn't even think they'd go there.. I thought they'd play some more new stuff, but then they hit us with “Celebrity Skin” and that's when the roof came off of that place.. That's got to be top ten happiest moments of my life that 3 minutes or however long that song is... to be in the same building with that song live.. words can't begin to explain although I try my hardest.... I didn't get it on video because I was rockin' out at the time... Then “Samantha”, the song they played on Jonathon Ross's show.. that song friggin' rocks too.. the underlying heavy riff that Larkin sustains during this song is some real bad ass sounding stuff.. before the song, Love said “We've been a good date haven't we?”.. and after the song they said goodnight..

Must say it was the most interesting place I've seen a show. I'm Jay Porks, and Welcome to the twenty second installment of the Jay Porks Never ending concert series for Dinosaur Jr!!!!... tonight takes us to Williamsburg, to the Brooklyn Bowl, which I know- sounds like a bowling alley. It actually IS a bowling alley, along with being a pseudo-fancy restaurant, it's equipped with16 bowling lanes(each lane with a big screen on the end, showing a movie) to the right of a small concert stage... The space where use concertgoers will be standing is pretty basic... it's larger than I thought but still basic-just a floor. No ramps leading to higher seating, no side barricades. I see J. Mascis'(JM) three tan/beige double stacks Marshall amps being covered by a white sheet. Feel like I've been here for ever but it's still early, 7:08 actually and a few people are beginning to show up. Like ten maybe...There are people currently bowling- I wonder if that will continue throughout the show.... now that would be one cool bowling alley-when I used to go bowling on school trips to Gil Hodges Lanes there were never any bands playing.. just older women and cigarettes(something I had no use for at the time, but now would love to be around both)
I found where the merch chick was, and she had 20 dollar tee shirts...sold. There were also copies of Dinosaur Jr.'s new record “Farm”, and it came with a free hat. I already have a copy so I wasn't buying another one just to get the hat, so when about to ask how much for just the hat I read a sign that said “ No, you can't just by the hat. Why? Because we said so”... Ok, so much for that hat. After buying my shirt I went out to smoke to find no one of interest out there. Now here's the dilemma- do I head in and sit in the dark and wait two hours for the show to start or stay out here in the cigarette smoking zone to spot incoming concert goers?...Well there's no WiFi in this place (figures, never WiFi where I need it).. AnywayI decide to come in but sit on a couch looking right at where the merchant is being sold. If someone interesting is gonna pass by then this is the place to be. Take in mind it's 7:16pm. Two hours til show, and I've already limited myself to being within 10 feet of the door to this place for the next five hours...
peoples scores as well having my face on an amp. And I see JM walking around-he tends to do this-he walks around like he's a nobody seeming trying not to be noticed-he thinks he can get away with it, I mean.. rock star journalist's like yours truly aren't going to go running over like a prissy little fan boy, but I figured others would. I mean, dude has long platinum hair, how could you miss it? It looked like he was moving along just fine with little to no bothering by anyone.... I guess this is a hipster town after all. Rounding the corner on 10:15PM when they hit the stage, the one the only DINOSAUR JR!!
Kicked off the set with “Thumb”, first of all you knew it'd be a kick ass show when JM is wearing a Wipers tee shirt. Love the Wipers... anyway, right from the start- the first touch of chord my ears went numb almost-this was loud, noisy and distorted... and rocking! Every time JM touches the chord it explodes, and did you see his effects pedal set-up? Look at this:
Your kidding right? There's like 100's of different sounds you can alter you guitar to-how do you remember which ones which ,when I can't even ride a bike? As they get into songs like 'In a jar' and 'Budge' you just become a witness to cerebral assassinations of instruments We got the extended version of “Pieces”, a song I happen to love off the new record “Farm”-somewhere between this song and “Plans” and “Pick me up” which followed, was where Mascis just completely gave this this six string a total beat down-he was killing it. He plays a Fender Jazzmaster, which is a discontinued model but Fender provides JM with custom guitars (I hear he's got velvet running up the back of the neck for comfort-how cool?).. “Feel the Pain” was awesome, because it was one of the handful of songs I recognized without looking over at the set list which was a foot away from me taped to the stage in large font. You can't hear any vocals at the spot I'm in, which is how it usually is with me. It's awesome to be there if your not trying to take videos for YouTube and stuff. I'm trying to write a blog here, I'm so close that the light shows interfere with my pictures as oppose to enhance them, but I got two full song son video “Thumb” and “Freak Scene”(Freak Scene is the song that Dave Grohl copies his guitar riffs from).. all of a sudden I remember there's other members of this band, and I look over to see Murph kickin it big time on drums-really laying it down. And there's not enough to be said about Lou's bass playing-it's a different kind of sound. Lou plays a sort of alternation of
heavily distorted fast chords melded in with utterly decaying lows-blisteringly blissful... He takes queue from both hardcore and punk concurrently... He's like the bass player version of JM, where it sounds like something, unique-something totally of it's own.. totally ripping through the traditional basslines you'd expect to hear Song's like “Forget the Swan” with Lou singing lead and JM soloing underneath make for inexplicable, indescribable type of rock. I want to call it noise but it's too melodic. Want to call it “grunge” but it's too fancy, too well played. It's really something of it's own. They actually went off with the two aforementioned songs. They played “Freak Scene” and then played “Forget the Swan” and walked off stage. Without even saying goodbye! This was 11:46, and without a goodnight I would think they'd come back out, and here they do, about 5 minutes later. They get into a song, which of course being an encore has exceeded the written set list, so I do not recognize the song. It's loud, abrasive and awesome and I hope someone can get back to me with the name of that song. Then after that there kinda looking at each other wondering what to play and then someone screams “Just Like Heaven!” and JM looks at Murph and gives him the “fuck it, why not” look and they end an masterful set by covering the Cure, awesome....

vibes flowing. They were sort of like 311, a little conventional hard rock orientated yet still had that little dash of reggae/ska bop to it. It was cool, no weird instruments that I need to go look up on the internet, no stupid things like “This is a song about hope” or anything like that. The best compliment I've come to be able to dish out to a band is that they didn't annoy me in any way-and that's what this band did. They rocked because they didn't annoy me. I'm sure they have a myspace, probably
like, pretty far up there and it's about to get rowdy; and it did. They kicked off the set with “Beautiful Disaster” and the place was jumping. I'm telling you these people are crazy-song by song it just got worse, and by worse I mean better. It was frigging rocking in there! And everyone was dancing and shit and it was dark so I was actually getting behind girls like, groovin' because they didn't know I wasn't there boyfriend then they went and found him. I did this all night, even with that hot chick in the white top that I told Pam I thought was hot. Awesome. A couple
songs later(wasn't taking down the set list because I was jumping up and down like a maniac) when they got into “Come Original” and “All Mixed up” is when I began to get “all bruised up”-there were different sorts of moshes going. You had the hardcore punk circle of death is what I call it, thats what when down at the Germs show I saw. There's a circle of people and there are usually 3 to 4 people being pushing one direction to the other slamming into everyone surrounding, me and Pam were getting knocked aside from time to time. Then there was also the 'push everyone forward spring' as I call it-where like 5 dudes line up and push everyone in front of them so everyone leans about 5 feet forward and then flings back at the rest of us spectators-but I saw this happen a few times and it was like right in front of us. The ruckus subdued after they ran off and had the drum solo followed by the whole band beatin the shit outta snare drums simultaneously-it was crazy. Then Peanut with the 10 minute bass solo, he's a frigging beast with it-I think he plays a 5 string bass(if not a 6 string). Then they all came back out and played something for “all the old school 311 fans” and jumped into “Down”, literally. I took flight lunging forward on to a bunch of other people(Pam said it best: “I don't think my feet were on the ground at all in there”) and then when I got flung back I was in the middle of one of
those circles of death and I got knock around pretty good before landing back in my spot to just jump up and down in unison with everybody in the building. Weed is being smoked everywhere, and cigarettes too people were just going all out. And funny at the beginning of one of the songs they played after that dude was like “Alright everyone put your lighters up for this one” and there were dozens of flames lit as event staff looks on, not being able to do anything about it because we smartened up and didn't tell them we had lighters at the door. Take that! One disappointment I had was that they didn't play “Who's got the herb” or “Amber” (or their cover of “Love song” now that I think about it) but they have an album to promote so you gotta play the new stuff and you can't play everything-that's why I'll see them again next time they hit town. Ended the set with a song called “Jackpot”, of which crowd participation was asked for-I don't remember what we had to do but we sang along something. It was just so nuts in there all night, afterwards was just a complete dead feeling. Felt like I got beat up, and it was a good thing!
walking in my direction, so I was like “there he is!” in the obnoxious way I talk before getting serious and asking him “How's” the tour going?” Cris said “It's really cool man been great”-as he looks around- “we got three great bands tonight. I hope more people show up for Dynasty (Electric)”. I said told him how I thought they were cool last time they opened for the them and then he went on to talk about Elmo Kirkwood, Curt Kirkwood's son and member of the band Kirkwood-Dellinger, who were up after Dynasty Electric. Cris: “My nephew's band is really rounding out and he's a beast on guitar man. He's playing is getting so much better-like, me and brother have been playing together for years and this kid just sits around playing and we look at him like dude how'd you do that?” He seemed excited, didn't wanna keep him from any pre-show rituals.
Kirkwood-Dellinger was so much cooler than I thought they would. They were almost groovy at times- Elmo Kirkwood is a frigging beast with it. The stuff he was doing was pretty interesting and noisy. He didn't have as many pedals as his father, but was an absolute monster. There whole band was well rounded, as they switched instruments after every couple of songs. Played from like 930 to about 1030 probably a little after. Then, a warm moment, as I turn to take a look at the crowd about halfway through their set, there leaning on a pole about 15 feet away, is Curt Kirkwood looking on as a proud father watching his son become a rock star. After they went off we all sat in suspense awaiting that proud father to hit the stage with his great band, The Meat Puppets!!!
nice roar going when came out. I'm right in the middle leaned on the stage because they took the two amps in front of me away so I had plenty of room to put my note pad and camera down. Good times front row. They kicked off the set with “Plateau”, it was right at these first chords that for the first time of the night I'm past feeling tired and way too deep into feeling: “Wow this is freaking awesome” to even think about it. After that another favorite of mine in “Commin' Down” and that's when things started getting cerebral in a sense that everyone in the place had, for lack of better term given themselves to the music at this point. “Touchdown King” is a song off the 'Monsters' album (they're most interesting album-in a good way) that's been a staple in their live set for years now-so they drift off into oblivion in the middle of it. It's a blissful switch from song to
outer space to song throughout every Meat Puppets set. They got into “Station” next-on the video you hear me say 'Station' before the song starts on the video because I saw Curt point to Cris(which is also on the video), signifying that this is the one he sings lead vocals. “Go to your head” was the first song of the night they played off the new album 'Sewn Together', which is an awesome record. The dude next to me asked me if I heard it and what I thought and I explained to him the intricacies of the greatness of the album. Then I saw Shandon tell Cris “Oh Me”, and off we went. The crowd is building as the night go on-I can't see it but I can feel it; the room getting smaller and everything being louder. “Up on the sun” was awesome, I should have taped that one but my arm would've got tired I think it ran about 8 minutes. That's when stuff started getting lost in the little light show we had going on-I'm not sure if they bring a light show or they just use whats there when they show up but you notice some of the pictures just look like cartoonish almost. Then a change up-I've seen it on YouTube but never personally, they jumped into “Sam” and for lack of a poetic description here: That sh!t was crazy!
Who can keep up with those lyrics? (It's faster than R.E.M.'s "It's the end of the world as we know it", a song I have karaoked successfully without lyrics.. ) I tried and failed and for a dude with no voice I was getting it in. I must have screamed out “Attacked By Monsters” 5 times-I really wish they'd play that once when I see them-I've said before I bet they can't play it live. After 'Sam' they went into “Monkey and the snake” before doing “Light”, another one I don't recall ever seeing live personally-so I got that one too. “Aurora Borealis” was the yin to the yang of “Light”, a twangy, instrumental tune that makes you close your eyes and differentiate each instruments sound, switch back and forth from bass to guitar. Amazing. And if it couldn't get better-”Backwater” smacks everyone in the face. There's a light mosh behind me as I get bumped into every now and then. They got into “Lake of fire” fairly quickly after that, where when Curt was slowly strumming I said “Lake of fire already?” and they rocked it with that one-the extended version. Clocked at 6 minutes with the noise fest jam type ending of the song they always do. Shandon Sahm is the real deal too-I noticed it during lake of fire that he was fitting in just fine. With his cool Devo tee shirt on. After that they said goodnight and went off stage.
they neared the end of the tearing down the house with this song, the Sahm starts kicking his drum set around, and I thought that was so fucking awesome I started screaming “yea!!” and he stacked up his drum set in the middle of the stage and walked off as Curt Kirkwood was at the amp.. slowing turning it down....and down...and down...until the noise was gone and the only sound left was roars from the crowd and a “Thanks a lot, goodnight”.
